Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (3)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were not struggling, we were losing the game but not struggling. We had really good defensively and offensively. The first half was better than the second."

On Phil Foden: "Winning games is when you become a world class player. Everyone play good but you have to win games, and he wins games. What can I say?

"He loves football. He lives to play. There are people who like to play. He loves to play football.

"He will already be a legendary player because in a short age, the games played, the minutes, the goals scored, the titles won and he is from the home and that is why the connection with the fans is unbelievable.

"He is the player of the season, with all the respect for incredible players but no-one has been so decisive for us as him this season."

  5. Post update

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Manchester United had just three shots today. The goal was the only effort on target.

Only once on record (from 2003-04) have they had fewer in a single Premier League game (two against Liverpool in April 2022).

    Roy Keane

Former Man Utd captain on Sky Sports

Standards have dropped. We're almost praising United. They've lost. They used to perform in the big games and compete.

Now we're sitting here saying they did did alright, better shape. They lost 3-1. For half and hour they were just hanging in there and didn't get a kick.

  8. 'We showed a lot of character'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (5)

    Manchester United

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to MOTD: "Disappointed as we wanted to win the game. We showed a lot of character, but it wasn't enough to win the game.

"Obviously discipline and we know against City you need to be focused tactically and today the individually City won the game as they had great moments where they could find their goals."

On the game-plan: "The plan is to win the game and we knew City would pin us back.

"We knew they would have the ball for long spells, we had to be patient and but obviously when you give a lot of space they have the qualities to hurt you.

"In the second half we had more control of the game and that is strange as that is when they got the goals."

  9. 'Last week was more of a problem'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (6)

    Gary Neville

Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

Last week against Fulham was more of a problem than today. Today was likely going to end in defeat.

Villa play Spurs next week so both could drop points so United could get close. There's still hope for United there but they're inconsistent.

  10. 'I think the plan went well'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (7)

    Manchester United

More from Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "We had two players on the pitch which were not 100% [fit]. Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford, but they gave everything like the whole team and we are disappointed with the score."

On Marcus Rashford: "Absolutely they fought, the togetherness and the performance was very good. On another day we could have won this - small margins.

"Especially Rashford he had some good opportunties to score another goal and Alejandro Garnacho at moments [had opportunties].

"I think the plan went well, very small margins so all the credits is to Man City and how consistent they can play."

On being booked: "Let's say this it is debatable there was contact [on Rashford] and it's a defining moment in the game, in the counter-attack they scored.

"It was soft [foul on Rashford], but when you are in a full sprint you lose your rhythm that is why he went down."

On injuries: "I don't know, they had to come off, but I preferred to keep them [Rashford and Evans] on as the organisation was very good."

On damage of losing: "This year on we are really progressing and you have to get some points back. Everyone can beat everyone and things can quickly turn around.

"Number five [fifth position in the league] can also be a position for Champions League so we have to fight for it!"

  11. 'I want to be the player for the big games'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (9)

    Manchester City

Manchester City's Phil Foden, speaking to Sky Sports: "My aim is to turn up in the big games. That is what I want to do and I think this season I am proving that. I just need to keep working hard.

"I understand what it means for the fans - a derby at the Etihad. It means everything for me, to score as well is even better but it was about the win today."

Captain Kyle Walker on Foden: "This season he has been nothing short of first class. That is the standard he sets for himself and we set for him. It is the standard he needs to keep up now.

"When he comes in on his left foot we call him the sniper because he likes to shoot. When he comes in on the left foot you know he has the calmness and composure to pick his spot.

"We lean on him. We need important players like him because they help you win games.

"He puts the work in, he is always doing extra shooting. His goals are coming in, he is reaping the rewards and he needs to keep these standards up."

  12. 'Foden best player in the Premier League right now'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (10)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC MOTD: "Not winning would not be good but we matched the result with the performance and it is really good.

"We started really well but after seven minutes and the first long ball we were not in the correct line. We we were a little more anxious in the first half in the final third but yeah it was a really good game.

"They are a team built for the transitions and they can kill you in them. That is why you have to not lose that. If we attack not in a good position they can make good transitions and score a second goal and make it more difficult."

On Phil Foden: "It is the amount of games he is playing. He was always a talented player but now he is more mature and understands more the game, especially defensively. He can play middle, right, make moments and cut inside, play in the left, scoring from the left. What can I say? He is the best player in the Premier League right now for the amount of things he does. Unbelievable."

His defensive work give you as much pleasure as other stuff? "When he scores two goals it gives me more pleasure than the other stuff. We don't negotiate over that, the guy who doesn't do that doesn't stay in the team. He loves football, he lives for football. He is a joy and his work ethic is unbelievable."

On title challenge: "It is about us. We can't control what Liverpool or Arsenal, Aston Villa or other contenders do, it is about us. We do what we have to do to win today, next Wednesday and Sunday. This team is legendary.

"Will we do it? I don't know. We have today more points at this stage than last season. The difference is Liverpool have I don't know how many more points than this stage last season. When the opponent is behaving like this, what can I say, congratulations so far. We will continue to try game by game."

Erling Haaland only had 15 touches today. He made five successful passes.

He hadn't touched the ball for 15 minutes before his goal. And then scores.

    Micah Richards

Former Man City defender on Sky Sports

On Erling Haaland's miss and then goal

It doesn't seem to bother him. He continues to make the runs.

If you look at the game purely from a tactics point of view you want a striker to be more involved in the build-up play, have more touches, create chances for his team-mates.

But in this team he doesn't have to. They've got De Bruyne, Foden, Bernardo, Rodri, who can play those passes.

His role is to keep the line very high so he can draw defenders towards him to give the others space. And then he finds his movement.

He often goes to the back post, not the ball and gets a tap-in.

  15. Post update

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Six players have scored for Manchester City in both derbies in a Premier League season - including Phil Foden and Erling Haaland.

The others are Niall Quinn (1992-93), Shaun Goater (2002-03), Shaun Wright-Phillips (2003-04), Yaya Toure (2013-14) and Sergio Aguero (2014-15).

  16. 'We have to accept it'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (13)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to Match of the Day: "I think it was a good performance overall, we went 1-0 up and we had our moments after it to score the second one.

"We defended very well and there were two defining moments when we nearly made a breakthrough and conceded the first goal.

"Then you are disappointed, we have to accept it and still were had the opportunties to at least get one point, but the win was also possible."

On Kyle Walker foul on Marcus Rashford: "I looked back and asked Rashy [Rashford] if there was contact, maybe soft but there was contact."

On tactics: "Getting behind the defending line with the speed of Garnacho, already after a couple of minutes there was some good breakthrough and then quickly after it was a good goal from Rashford.

"We closed the middle very good and the box very good.

"We stuck to the plan and we had the moment of the reckless action of the goalkeeper of City and after that attack we conceded the goal."

  17. Post update

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Manchester City (W31 D5) equal their longest competitive home unbeaten run under Pep Guardiola - 36 from December 2016 to March 2018.

The club record is 42 from December 1919 to November 1921.

For as much as United hung in with negative tactics for a half, the real gulf in class showed at 2-1 when United needed to get the ball back and couldn't work out how to do it.

  19. 'Every time you don't win a game it is a damage at this club'

FT: Man City 3-1 Man Utd

Premier League: Haaland & Foden earn Man City derby win - reaction (14)

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think the commitment from the team was there.

"We had our chances. Sometimes we played a little too deep but you know City do that to all the teams, you have to defend your box and we did that really well in the first half. From a chance that could be ours it ended up 1-1.

"There's always something more you can do in the game, if it is City or someone else you can always do something better. City are a team that knows how to have the ball and pin teams back. We knew we had to defend our goal really well and I think we did, we should have had more spells with the ball than we did in the second half."

On fight to get in Champions League: "Every time you don't win a game it is a damage at this club. We know what this club demands and we want to win the games we are involved in. We didn't get the three points today but there's still a long way to go. We know it is not everything in our hands because other teams have to lose points but we have to do our job."
