With a Clime paid subscription, you get one of the most comprehensive weather radars out of all the weather apps on this list. While other radars might show the temperature, rain and snow, Clime's radar will show you cloud coverage, snow depths and even active fire and hotspots.

Doppler weather radars are remote sensing instruments and are capable of detecting particle type (rain, snow, hail, insects, etc), intensity, and motion. Radar data can be used to determine the structure of storms and to help with predicting severity of storms.

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

Essentially, those lines on radar just show that air in the atmosphere is trying to move up, but something is preventing it from rising so far up that it could develop into showers and storms.

The most common ones used in the United States are those pulse radars that make up the National Weather Service's NEXRAD (NEXt Generation RADar) WSR-88D system and the less common, but more sophisticated, phased-array radars used mainly by the military and in atmospheric science research.

Each weather app has access to varying sources of model data. Some are exclusive to their respected company, and some are borrowed from other sources and then molded to make them their own.

When the officer measures your speed from a moving police car, then the error rate jumps to as high as 30%. For this reason, you may be able to successfully challenge the accuracy of police radar. In order to question the accuracy, you need to request certain information before your trial.

The colors are typically a spectrum. The greens indicate light or moderate rainfall. Yellow, orange, and red indicate moderate to heavy rainfall and can also indicate hail. Whites or blues mean snowfall and pink indicates freezing rain, sleet, or a wintry mix.

Look at More Than Just Precipitation

A patch of dark red moving toward your location means there's a thunderstorm on the way. A line of heavy precipitation moving in unison is a sign of a squall line that could pack gusty winds.

A phenomenon called "ducting" can cause the radar beam to be reflected toward the ground, showing non-existent precipitation. Ducting can occur in the early-morning hours if the surface temperature is cooler than the air aloft.
